Mare Services
Mares staying at the Equine Center during breeding season are cared for by
students with the supervision of the faculty and staff. They receive daily
grooming and exercise or turn out, depending on the mare. All mares are
teased daily as a part of the breeding classes.
Mares arriving for foaling are placed in our spacious foaling stalls and
monitored round the clock. Night watch consists of two students who monitor
the mare. The students will call a faculty or staff member when the mare's
goes into labor. The faculty or staff member will be present for the
delivery if any complications arise.

Stallion Services
Our stallion services are available to anyone interested at any time of
year. Stallions may stand the breeding season here at the Equine Center,
live year round or be trailered in for collections. All breeds are
welcome. Stallions living at ATI receive daily grooming and exercise from
students and staff members.
We offer a test cooling for all stallions that are going to be shipping
semen that season. During our test we collect and evaluate the semen. It is
then extended in 10 different extenders at different semen to extender
ratios and cooled. Each sample will be evaluated at 24, 48 and 72 hours.
This will enable us to determine which extender is best for your stallion.
Our newest stallion service is semen freezing. The popularity of frozen
semen in the U.S. has greatly increased over that past few years.
Equine semen is much more fragile than other animals when it comes to
processing. We take great pride in the care and thorough testing that we do
on our freezing stallions. A test freeze will consist of 72 different
media and cooling rates. From these results we will narrow down the top 5-10
results and re-test those again to find the best 2-3 mixtures for each
horse. We use the 5 ml macro tubes for freezing. This is much more
convenient at the time of insemination because it means that 1 straw is
1 breeding dose. Once we begin freezing the semen, we will prepare each of these top
2-3 until we have confirmed pregnancies. Motility doesn't always equal
fertility, what looks the best post thaw may not get mares pregnant. We will
be able to test breed one of our mares to confirm that pregnancy will result
from this semen.
