Equine Division Faculty
Assistant Professor
Debra Powell, B.S., M.S., Ph.D., P.A.S.
Dr. Powell is a native of Charleston, South Carolina. She received her
Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Hampton University in Virginia;
Masters of Science degree in Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from
the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana; and Doctor of Philosophy
degree in Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from the University of
Kentucky in Lexington.
Dr. Powell currently teaches courses in equine nutrition , equine exercise
science, animal anatomy and physiology, horse facilities management, horse
evaluation , and introduction to horse science. She is certified as a
professional animal scientist (P.A.S.) by the American Registry of
Professional Animal Scientist.. Dr. Powell is a life-long horsewoman whose
interest lies in eventing.

Horse Herd Manager
Amy Peeples, A.A.S., B.S.
Amy is originally from McConnelsville, Ohio. She received her Associate of
Applied Science degree in Horse Production and Management from The Ohio State
University- ATI. She then went to Columbus and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture majoring in
Animal sciences with a minor in Agricultural Business from The Ohio State
University. Amy is responsible for the day-to-day
management of the horse herd and facility, helping with instructional and
laboratory activities, and providing our clients with quality services.
Equine Center Staff
Associate Professor, Technical Coordinator
Karen Wimbush, A.S., B.S., M.S., Ph.D., P.A.S.
Dr. Wimbush is originally from western Maryland. She received her Associate
of Science degree in Business Management from Haperstown Junior College;
Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from the University of
Maryland; Masters of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Animal
Science from the University of Missouri. Dr Wimbush also has her
Instructor's certification from Morven Park International Equestrian
Institute in Leesburg, Virginia. She has ridden in numerous disciplines
including dressage, combined training, reining and saddleseat.
Dr. Wimbush currently teaches courses in horsemanship and equitation, mare
and stallion reproduction , horse health and breaking and training of young
horses. In her spare time, she is actively involved in training her
Australian Shepherds in agility and herding.
